  5. INSTALLATION OF SOFTWARE
  6. ==========================

  8. ***NOTE***: 
  9.  
  10.     You can run the Canadian Geographic Explorer from the CD without installing
  11.     any files to your hard drive.  Optionally, you can perform the installation
  12.     to create a Canadian Geographic Group and install any of the additional
  13.     software products provided with Explorer.
  14.  
  15.     The PCI FLY, Image Handler and Radarsat manual must be installed to be used.
  16.  
  17. Windows 95:
  18.  
  19.     To install a Canadian Geographic Explorer group, from Windows 95 Explorer, 
  20.     select your CD-ROM drive and double-click on the SETUP icon.

  22. Windows 3.1:

  24.     To install a Canadian Geographic Explorer group, from the Program Manager, 
  25.     click on the File menu, select Run and type:

  27.     d:\setup
  28.  
  29.     where "d" is the letter of your CD-ROM drive.

  31. Macintosh:

  33.     To install a Canadian Geographic Explorer folder, double-click on the 
  34.     Explorer Installer icon on the CD-ROM.

  37. STARTING THE PROGRAM
  38. ======================

  40. Windows 95:

  42.     To run the Canadian Geographic Explorer from your CD, open the Windows 95 
  43.     Explorer, select your CD-ROM drive and double-click on the EXPWIN32 icon.
  44.  
  45.     If you chose to install the software, after installation the Canadian 
  46.     Geographic Explorer Window will be left open.  Double-click on the 
  47.     Canadian Geographic Explorer icon to start the program.

  49.     When you do not have the Canadian Geographic Explorer Window open, you can 
  50.     also start the program by clicking on the START button, selecting Programs, 
  51.     Canadian Geographic Explorer (for the group), Canadian Geographic Explorer
  52.     (for the program), then releasing the mouse button.

  55. Windows 3.1:

  57.     To run the Canadian Geographic Explorer from your CD, from the 
  58.     Program Manager, click on the File menu, select Run and type:

  76.     To run the Canadian Geographic Explorer from your CD, insert the CD
  77.     in your CD-ROM drive and a window will automatically open.  Double-click
  78.     on the Canadian Geographic Explorer icon.

  80.     If you chose to install the software, after installation the Explorer folder 
  81.     will be left open.  Double-click on the Canadian Geographic Explorer icon 
  82.     to start the program.

  84.     When you do not have the Canadian Geographic Explorer Window open, you can 
  85.     also start the program by opening the Explorer folder then double-clicking 
  86.     on the Canadian Geographic Explorer icon.

  89. ADDITIONAL SOFTWARE
  90. =====================
  91. PCI FLY!:
  92.  
  93.     The PCI FLY! software requires a Power PC with System 7.x or 
  94.     an IBM-compatible with Windows 95.
  95.  
  96.     PCI FLY! will automatically start up and load a demo file when double-clicked.
  97.  
  98. PCI IMAGE HANDLER:
  99.  
  100.     The PCI Image Handler software requires a Macintosh PowerPC with system 7.x
  101.     or an IBM-compatible with Windows 95.  The program requires 16MB of RAM.
  102.  
  103.     In Windows 95, double-click on the HANDLER icon to start the program.
  104.     Click on the button USE IMAGE FILE and a dialog box will appear.
  105.     Enter *.JPG as the File Name.  The file ELTORO.JPG will be displayed.
  106.     Double-click on the ELTORO.JPG icon and the dialog box will disappear.
  107.     Click the ACCEPT AND LOAD button and the image will then be loaded and
  108.     displayed.  Additional HELP is available on the right side of the menu
  109.     bar of the image window.

  111.     On a Macintosh PowerPC open the Explorer folder, then open the pci-image
  112.     folder and double-click on the Handler.ppc icon to start the image handler
  113.     program.  Click on the button USE IMAGE FILE to open a dialog box to select
  114.     the image file to be loaded.  Double-click on the PCI folder, double-click
  115.     on the demo folder, then double-click on the ELTORO.JPG file.  The dialog
  116.     box will disappear.  Click on the button ACCEPT AND LOAD to load the image
  117.     and display it on the screen.  Additional HELP is available by selecting the
  118.     image windows and selecting the HELP menu.

  120. RADARSAT MANUAL:
  121.  
  122.     The RADARSAT manual requires the Adobe Acrobat Reader.  This software is
  123.     provided on the CD-ROM and can be installed initially or at a later time
  124.     by running the installer again.
  125.  
  126. For additional information on these packages consult the documentation 
  127. provided with the software.

  130. TROUBLE-SHOOTING
  131. ==================
  132.  
  133. Explorer is an exciting, full-featured product that makes full use of all of the
  134. capabilities of your computer.  It is recommended that you do not run any other
  135. programs while running Explorer to achieve the best possible performance.
  136.  
  137. If you find that the graphics look incorrect, you likely have your video card set
  138. to less than 256 colours.  A minimum of 256 colours are required to run Explorer
  139. correctly.  Change your video to support 256 or more colours.

  142. Windows:
  143.  
  144.     If you find that videos are not playing, you probably did not install
  145.     QuickTime during the installation.  To correct the problem, run the
  146.     installation again and ensure that you perform the QuickTime installation.
  147.

  149. Macintosh:
  150.  
  151.     Explorer requires a system with a minimum of 8MB of ram installed.  However,
  152.     some extensions may consume too much memory to allow Explorer to run properly.
  153.     In order to use the program you may need to remove or turn off some of the 
  154.     extensions.  Make sure that you do not remove the QuickTime, Sound Manager 
  155.     or CD-ROM extensions since you will need these to run the Explorer.
  156.  
  157.     You can also increase performance by allocating more memory to Explorer.
  158.     This requires you to install the software to your hard drive.    
  159.     Select the Canadian Geographic Explorer icon in the Explorer folder on your
  160.     hard drive, then choose Get Info from the File menu.  Select the preferred 
  161.     size (in the bottom right corner) and set it as high as your RAM will allow.
  162.     Close the information window.

  164.     If you encounter problems starting Canadian Geographic Explorer, select the
  165.     Canadian Geographic Explorer icon in the Explorer folder on your hard drive,
  166.     then choose Get info from the File menu.  Set the preferred size to 5000.
  167.     Close the information window.
